Read Aloud for Accessibility: Text to Speech for Every Reader
For readers with dyslexia or other reading difficulties, text on a screen isn't always the easiest way in. Read-aloud tools give you another path: listen to the same PDF, article, or book instead of decoding it word by word. ReadAlouder is free, and built to be a genuinely useful assistive technology for reading — not an afterthought feature.
What the Research Says
This isn't just a nice-to-have. Peer-reviewed studies have specifically tested text-to-speech as a reading accommodation for students with reading disabilities, with consistent findings:
A study in Annals of Dyslexia tested reading comprehension in children aged 8–12 with reading and language difficulties across several conditions, including silent reading and TTS with and without word highlighting. TTS significantly improved comprehension compared to no TTS.
Bonifacci et al. (2022), Journal of Computer Assisted Learning — students with dyslexia showed better reading comprehension and reduced mind-wandering when using text-to-speech, and were significantly more on-task compared to self-paced silent reading.
Wood, Moxley, Tighe & Wagner (2018), Journal of Learning Disabilities — a meta-analysis of text-to-speech and related read-aloud tools found an average positive effect on reading comprehension for students with reading disabilities (effect size 0.35, 95% CI 0.14–0.56, p < .01).
